(AAC) ADVANCED ARCHITECTURAL CONSTRUCTION
This module provides an overview of construction technology principles and practices, specifically for long-span and tall buildings. It emphasizes construction systems such as basement, building façade, envelope systems, and steel construction. Additionally, the module explores contemporary construction technologies like modular construction (MC) and Industrialised Building System (IBS).
Project 1
This assignment requires students to form a 5-member group, conduct a study on an IBS-constructed building and identify all IBS components used. They must then design apartment units not exceeding 100 square meters, incorporating mainly IBS structures and components. The design should include various elements such as precast walls, blockwork, hollow core slabs, precast staircase, toilet pods, and prefabricated timber roof trusses. The report should encompass the concept and framework of proposed IBS categories, relevant drawings, construction sequences, and schedules of modular components.
Project 2
This assignment, aligned with the Studio Design Project in semester 4, aims to enhance students' technical studies and design development. It focuses on analyzing and establishing structural and envelope systems in students' designs, emphasizing the importance of logical and practical construction systems. The assignment encourages students to integrate construction considerations into their design process, addressing the common issue where amateur designers neglect construction aspects, leading to later modifications. Overall, the goal is to increase students' technical competency in design.
Reflection
I faced a lot of challenges while doing the assigned tasks, and this part was the toughest for me. I looked forward to the tutorials because they let me ask questions, get answers, and learn from my instructors and classmates who shared their experiences. Dealing with the limitations and finding the right balance between being creative and following the rules in this subject was hard, causing many stressful days and nights. Still, I was happy to have the chance to go through it all. I appreciate the information, expertise, and new skills I gained from this module, which will surely help me in my architecture career.
