This module focuses on sustainable design, exploring environmentally responsive building enclosures. Students study precedents, considering factors like sun, wind, and existing context. Designs aim to harmoniously merge with the environment, prioritizing the best experiences for the community. Integration of prior knowledge and research from the Asian Architecture module contributes to creating a design narrative fostering a sense of community.
For project 1, students conduct a site visit to identify physical and intangible site qualities, engaging with users to understand community needs. The design response includes creating a Kebun Komuniti Plan, serving as the foundation for subsequent projects.
Project 1B focuses on materiality in the user experience within the Kebun Komuniti Plan. Students, working in groups of 3-4, design an Architectural Allotment within their tutorial group's plan. The allotment showcases architectural form as it relates to activities involving plant cultivation, emphasizing themes like seating, shading, and storage that align with the programmatic requirements of Project 2.
The project involves designing a USJ7 Kebun Komuniti Center within the proposed plan for the USJ7 Urban Farm in USJ7 Park, currently supporting a non-profit project for low-income mothers. Students must create comprehensive design proposals, incorporating site analysis and precedent studies. They are tasked with crafting narratives that respond to the environment and community, exploring sustainable design solutions that minimize environmental impact through diverse spatial organizations and passive strategies. The goal is to ensure the design harmoniously merges with the environment, providing optimal spatial experiences and fostering a sense of community.
I faced a lot of challenges while doing the assigned tasks, and this part was the toughest for me. I looked forward to the tutorials because they let me ask questions, get answers, and learn from my instructors and classmates who shared their experiences. Dealing with the limitations and finding the right balance between being creative and following the rules in this subject was hard, causing many stressful days and nights. Still, I was happy to have the chance to go through it all. I appreciate the information, expertise, and new skills I gained from this module, which will surely help me in my architecture career.
