This module focuses on sustainable design, exploring environmentally responsive building enclosures. Students study precedents, considering factors like sun, wind, and existing context. Designs aim to harmoniously merge with the environment, prioritizing the best experiences for the community. Integration of prior knowledge and research from the Asian Architecture module contributes to creating a design narrative fostering a sense of community.
Pre-Design Studies & Analysis
Students will work in groups to investigate, study, and analyze the site through observation, research, surveys, and interviews, gaining familiarity and understanding its conditions in relation to target users and project objectives. This phase emphasizes sensing the place to develop an appropriate strategy and program. Tasks include conducting a townscape appraisal, referencing key urban studies texts for deeper analysis, studying precedents to inform program development, and defining suitable programs while assessing their impact.
Design Strategies & Exploration
Students will refine their Project 1A proposal individually, exploring functionality, spatial quality, and form under tutor guidance. Through sketches, models, and conceptual drawings, they will analyze and test design ideas. A pin-up presentation will showcase their explorations and final scheme, demonstrating a strong grasp of program, structure, and materiality, supported by relevant references.
Final Design Presentation & Report
Following Project 1B, students will finalize their Urban Room design, integrating environmental, technological, and technical strategies. Lectures on poetics, tectonics, sustainability, safety compliance, façades, and presentation will provide additional guidance. Emphasis will be on passive cooling, structure, and materiality to enhance user experience. As final-year students, work must demonstrate critical thinking, structural awareness, environmental sensitivity, and regulatory compliance. The project culminates in a comprehensive design presentation and report aligning with project objectives.
This semester felt different because, for the first time, I could clearly identify my personal style and vision. From the beginning, I had a distinct thought process about what I wanted to do and what I didn’t, which brought clarity and confidence to my work. Though there were a few hiccups leading up to presentation day, I am grateful that my final presentation went better than I could have ever dreamed. The constructive feedback and encouragement from the critics made all the sleepless nights and tireless efforts worthwhile. To hear them say I had what it takes to continue for a long time was the most rewarding affirmation I could have received.
