This module educates students on the fundamentals of building design and the construction materials utilised for small to medium-sized structures. It concentrates on helping the reader grasp the fundamentals of the building components, such as the substructure, the superstructure, and common building materials like concrete, masonry, wood, metal, and glass.
Famous Architect’s Building: Materials Application
Each student must decide on a "interesting" building created by one of the listed architects. Following this, the student must list two structural building materials and five architectural building materials depending on the building they have chosen. Students must also study the concepts and ideas that guided the choice of the building's materials. Additionally, students must explain how one of the materials was installed on the chosen building.
Construction Drawing
For this module, students were required to create a set of construction drawings in groups of 6-7 people based on a floor plan for a double-story terraced house that they will acquire. The drawings must include the detailing of building elements on superstructure, such as floor, wall, door, window, staircase, and roof.
Assignments 1 and 2 provided valuable insights into basic construction and architectural knowledge. Assignment 1 focused on understanding construction in critical situations and introduced notable architects. However, improvements in poster design for clearer information presentation and deeper research for comprehensive understanding were identified. Assignment 2, conducted collaboratively with other courses, was enjoyable and fostered camaraderie. The emphasis on wood building expertise highlighted the importance of communication in interconnected drawings, emphasizing the impact of even minor modifications on the overall design.
