This module explores passive sustainable strategies in architectural design, examining how these strategies, when integrated with various architectural elements, enhance the quality of spatial experiences within a building. Students will analyze case studies to understand the applications of these strategies and their influence on space quality. The gained knowledge will inform the students' own studio project in implementing passive sustainable design strategies.
In groups of 4-5, students must select two case studies showcasing passive sustainable design strategies, with one from a tropical climate and another from a different climate region. The assignment involves comparing and identifying passive design strategies in both case studies, considering factors like site planning, daylighting, façade design, natural ventilation, and landscaping. Students are required to analyze the impact of these strategies on the project's quality and spatial experience. The final deliverables include an A0 infographic poster, an A4 landscape booklet, and a pre-recorded presentation representing the poster's content.
Each student must incorporate both passive and active green building strategies into their final architectural studio project. Utilize passive strategies from the tropical building case study conducted in Assignment 1, encompassing aspects such as site planning, daylighting, façade design, natural ventilation, strategic landscaping, and renewable energies. Students are required to document and compile their processes and final proposals in a soft copy, including an A4 reflective write-up and an A3 Design Report in PDF format.
Students are instructed to participate in a green building visit. Following the visit, they are required to prepare a reflective write-up, describing what they have learned from both the green building visit and Assignment 1. The reflection should include thoughts on how they intend to apply the strategies gleaned from these experiences in their own final projects.
I faced a lot of challenges while doing the assigned tasks, and this part was the toughest for me. I looked forward to the tutorials because they let me ask questions, get answers, and learn from my instructors and classmates who shared their experiences. Dealing with the limitations and finding the right balance between being creative and following the rules in this subject was hard, causing many stressful days and nights. Still, I was happy to have the chance to go through it all. I appreciate the information, expertise, and new skills I gained from this module, which will surely help me in my architecture career.
